Interactive Media Lab Dresden
The Interactive Media Lab at the Technische Universität Dresden is conducting research primarily in the field of modern Human-Computer Interaction and interactive Information Visualization. Its main focus is the development of interaction techniques and natural user interfaces using various interaction modalities (multitouch, pen, gaze, tangibles, gestures) and their combination in multi-display environments. The lab often fabricates novel input devices to illustrate the envisioned interaction techniques. Its basic research results are applied to several application domains and also to develop domain-specific solutions. The chair is lead by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Raimund Dachselt.
Chair of Media Design
The Chair of Media Design held by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rainer Groh in Dresden has 10 years of experience in teaching and researching interaction design. Research efforts are concentrated on extending the repertoire of methodical tools and rules of design by taking multi-sensory interaction channels into account. Modern tracking technologies require appropriate design models that address all relations between diverse elements such as: objects, space, eye, hand, and body. A main focus are experimental approaches and creativity techniques to foster novel interface metaphors and applications.
Industrial Design
The research of Jens Krzywinski and his team is at the intersection of engineering design and industrial design focusing on user experience and industrial products. Our approach to designing complex products is both creative and systematic. Research in design context forms a basement of a deeper understanding of the design process. Design inclusive research fosters interdisciplinary research by using design tools and methods while practice-based design research applies our knowledge in different industrial branches. Based on the users’ experiencing as well as needs of all stakeholders, enterprise and market we conduct research and development of products, systems and services that are technologically, ergonomically and aesthetically
convincing in the professional scenarios of tomorrow and beyond.
Process Control Systems Engineering
The Chair of Process Control Systems Engineering is developing notations, methods and tools for the design of process control strategies in the process industry. Starting point and goal of the engineering of control systems is a near-optimum, comprehensive overall system. For this purpose, the research focus of the chair is on the interactions between work processes, human-machine interfaces and technical structures with human performance, information models and architectures of process, automation and the Internet of Things and Services. The chair is held by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Leon Urbas.
Labour Sciences
Labour science is the research field of men and technology interaction, regarding work environments. Therein, the goal of utilising required scientific established solutions is a challenging design task, which needs to be accomplished. With the aim to offer economically successful products and services, it is mandatory to organise a large field of work related issues. Prof. Martin Schmauder and his research team find scientific solutions to these tasks since 2000, dividing their interests into the fields of work organisation, human factors, computer-based ergonomic evaluation and physical health
Acoustic and Haptic Engineering
Main research concept of Chair of Acoustic and Haptic Engineering is the perception based engineering. Successful industrial product development requires the consideration of the human perception and expectations. The team develops novel technologies, among others, for missing haptic feedback in consumer electronic applications from teleshopping or gaming to teleoperation. One of the important research subjects of team is product sound design/quality. The lab of Prof. Altinsoy’s team combines VR equipment for multiple modalities (auditory, tactile, vestibular, visual) and is capable of presenting high-performance, interactive simulations. A Wave Field Synthesis (Audio) reproduction system was installed to the laboratory. This system consists of 464 loudspeakers and 4 subwoofers. To generate whole-body vibrations and to mimic motions which we are exposed while travelling by car or airplane, a six-degree-of-freedom hydraulic motion platform was installed in MMM Lab.
